Ultimate is a sport of big moments – the long downfield huck, the layout goal, the end zone sky and the list goes on. Over the past four years of Major League Ultimate, those moments have been captured by our partners at UltiPhotos. In our series, Caught in Action, we will look at some of the great moments from MLU’s history and how they have been captured by the talented photographers at Ultiphotos.com. This week, we take a look at a moment captured by Rowdy Webb.
Over his four years in the MLU, Khalif El-Salaam has become something of a poster child for second-chance catches. Never giving up, El-Salaam has repeatedly come down with disc that have been tipped or blocked by opponents, frustrating defenders and delighting fans.
When El-Salaam and the Seattle Rainmakers travelled to face their Northwest rivals, the Portland Stags in Week 1 of the 2016 MLU Season, the veteran cutter did not disappoint. Trailing late in the 4th quarter, Seattle’s Brad Houser found himself with the disc deep in his own territory. As Houser turned downfield, he the speedy El-Salaam racing towards the end zone and launched a monster flick huck towards the goal line.
As Houser’s throw began to slow and descend, both El-Salaam and his mark made a play for it, and the disc was tipped forward. As the Stags defender tumbled to the turf, El-Salaam dove over his fallen mark, snatching the disc out of the air for the goal.
As El-Salaam bid for the disc, Webb snapped the shot and perfectly captured the scene.
