Ultimate is a sport of big moments – the long downfield huck, the layout goal, the sky in the end zone and the list goes on. Over the past four years of Major League Ultimate, those moments have been captured by our partners at UltiPhotos. In our series, Caught in Action, we look at some of the greatest moments from MLU’s history and how they have been captured by the talented photographers at UltiPhotos. This week, we take a look at a spectacular moment captured by John King.
The Portland Stags entered the 2015 Western Conference Final as the heavy favorite against the visiting Seattle Rainmakers. During their dominant 9-1 regular season, the Stags had defeated the 5-5 Rainmakers three times.
Perhaps in Seattle, they ought to change the saying to “Fourth Time’s a Charm”.
The Rainmakers came out firing, scoring the first goal of the game and pressing the Stags on both sides of the disc. After Portland tied the game at 1-1, Seattle looked to score again quickly, feeding the disc to their main offensive engine, Mark Burton around mid-field. Looking deep, Burton unleashed a huge backhand towards the corner of the end zone and teammate Isaac Entz.
Entz, finding himself between two Portland defenders, made a perfect bid for the disc, snagging it right over the head of one defender and bringing it in for the score. While the disc was knocked from his hands after he had landed, the referees correctly awarded Entz the goal.
As Entz snatched the disc from the air, King snapped his shot.
