Ultimate is a sport of big moments – the long downfield huck, the layout goal, the sky in the end zone and the list goes on. Over the past four years of Major League Ultimate, those moments have been captured by our partners at UltiPhotos. In our series, Caught in Action, we look at some of the greatest moments from MLU’s history and how they have been captured by the talented photographers at UltiPhotos. This week, we take a look at a spectacular moment captured by Brian Chu.
The Seattle Rainmakers and Portland Stags have developed an emotional rivalry over the past few seasons. While the Stags have been the regular season champs over each of the past three seasons, the Rainmakers have given them a battle each time they’ve met. In 2015, the Rainmakers upset the Stags in Portland in the Western Conference Finals, denying Portland their bid to the MLU Championship that year.
After suffering a 22-16 loss to the Portland in Week 1 of the 2016 season, the Rainmakers were looking to return the favor as the Stags came to Seattle for the home opener. Both teams came out firing with the score tied at six in the final minute of the 1st quarter.
Following a Portland score, Rainmakers veteran and former coach Steve Gussin looked deep for a streaking Brad Houser. Gussin launched the disc as Houser, the eventual 2016 Western Conference Offensive Player of the Year, took a perfect path to the disc, splitting multiple Portland defenders and elevating to bring down the score.
As Houser turned his body and leapt for the disc, Chu snapped the shot, perfectly capturing the moment.
