Gabriel “Gabe” Fertman joins the Seattle Rainmakers staff as General Manager Rusty Brown’s number two.
Fertman will be in charge of facilitating the Rainmakers’ team and organizational needs outside of game days. This extends from leading youth clinics, helping with player issues and concerns, and, as his title would suggest, assisting the general manager in a big picture setting.
“Gabe will be yet another integral part of the whole for our organization,” said Brown. “Making sure the little details are squared away will allow players and coaches to focus on their on-field goals.”
Fertman was in attendance last year at the final home game against the San Francisco Dogfish. The new Assistant GM recalls the game as being “one of the best events I’ve ever seen,” and anticipates that Rainmakers fans can expect more of the same this season, only bigger.
“Fans can expect to see the players leave it all out on the field and bring their A-game to every game,” said Fertman. “The fan experience is going to be top notch, fun and exciting. I’m going to bring everything it takes and more. I am super excited to be joining the Rainmakers team and am looking forward to applying my skills and enthusiasm for the good of the team.”
Fertman’s professional history involves a number of early startups, particularly in the outdoor, grocery, landscaping, and technology industries. He also recently completed his MBA at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute. Fertman cites his educational experience in sustainable business and his professional experience in helping businesses manage growth and scale up in viability and visibility as being right in line with what the Rainmakers are looking for.
“Gabe contacted us last season and took a tour of our game day activities,” said Brown. “His background in startup and non-profit organizations makes him a perfect candidate for small business enterprises like ours. He also has an interest in sports team management so we are an excellent starting point for his overall career goals.”
Fertman may not be a Seattle native – he was born in Antofagasta, Chile and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA – but he has been a big fan of Ultimate ever since he was a kid, having played summers in Pittsburgh and in college at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC with the Fighting Quakers. A recent transplant to the great city of Seattle, Fertman coached a youth team at ASA Mercer Middle School. He has also been playing league games with mixed team Air Mustangs whenever his schedule allows.
For better or worse, Fertman’s schedule is about to get very busy as he enters the preseason months of the 2014 season of Major League Ultimate.
“All in all, in the short time he’s been with us, I am enthusiastic about his hiring and what he has to offer the Rainmakers,” said Brown.
Stay tuned for further personnel announcements, combine recaps, player signings and more as the preseason continues.
